Welcome

The Tara Miller Melanoma Center at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania is a comprehensive center that unites research, clinical care, education, and outreach programs to improve the lives of patients with melanoma.  Despite tremendous advances in melanoma therapy, current therapies do not cure every patient. Many patients are still suffering and dying from melanoma. The Tara Miller Melanoma Center is dedicated to overcoming this challenge.

We are committed to providing exceptional care to all of our patients with melanoma and other types of skin cancers. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we deliver personalized care, integrating and connecting with providers from Dermatology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Pathology. We also collaborate with basic, translational, and population scientists who study new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat melanoma. The Center supports innovative research to truly change the trajectory of the disease for an individual patient. The Tara Miller Melanoma Center is a place where patients and their families can turn to for education and find up to date information regarding the best treatments for melanoma.

The Tara Miller Melanoma Center was established in 2019 with generous support from Debbie and George Miller in honor of their daughter, Tara Miller. As Dr. Bob Vonderheide, the Director of the Abramson Cancer Center said, “The number of people who were moved by Tara’s courage and her character is second only the number of lives that will be forever changed by her legacy”.

TIL Therapy Now Available!

TIL therapy is a type of immunotherapy that uses your body's own T cells (lymphocytes) to find and eliminate cancer cells. This new treatment is now available at Penn for eligible patients with advanced/metastatic melanoma that has not responded to targeted therapies or other immunotherapies. To schedule an appointment with our Penn melanoma care team for evaluation, please contact: 215-615-5858.

3D Imaging at Penn Dermatology

Penn Dermatology Oncology Center (PennDOC) has introduced an innovative, a non-invasive 3D whole body photography system into our clinical practices and is now being used in research programs.

3D Imaging Vectra systemThis new technology uses 92 cameras to capture images of the entire body’s skin in less than a few seconds. Converted into a 3D avatar of the patient, the images are then analyzed by AI, which provides data on lesion characteristics (e.g., diameter, border irregularity, color) and a risk assessment of irregularities.

System-integrated dermatoscopy allows investigation of individual skin lesion surface structure and color. With serial 3D images, it highlights pigmentary changes in existing lesions and identifies new lesions, providing the opportunity to monitor the progression of skin irregularities over time.

This system is ideal for patients who have an extensive history of multiple melanomas and other skin cancers.

To schedule an appointment with our Penn melanoma and skin cancer care team to discuss eligibility and availability of this service, please contact: 215-662-4062.

Please note that most health insurance providers are not covering this service at this time, so patients may be responsible for the costs.
